Notes on the Synod of the Year of the Eucharist, October 3-23, 2005
(First, a note: three cheers for Fr. Simon! Please read this: http://www.sffaith.com/ed/articles/1998/0298rs.htm.)
The Seven Points of the First Week of the Synod
Allow me to pass on some news from Zenit about the synod. The reported seven points of discussion during the first week of the synod have been these:
1. Eucharist as sacrifice and banquet. 2. The vertical and horizontal dimensions of the Eucharist. Eucharist and culture of life. 3. Abuses against the Eucharist. 4. The manner of celebration and of communion. 5. Ecumenism, intercommunion. 6. Relationship of the Eucharist with other sacraments. 7. Reconciliation which should lead to peace.
Many of us await with bated breath the words of the Pope which will address the countless liturgical abuses, that scandalize the faithful, ruin the integrity of their faith and expose priests to matter of grave sin. As for point seven, I have heard that the bishops of Chile (I think it was Chile) have announced such a year, to stress the association between the sacrament of reconciliation and the reception of the Holy Eucharist. It is one of the best kept secrets in the United States of America that a person who has awareness of having committed a mortal sin may not receive communion until they have confessed. But of course, fundamental option theologies convinced my entire generation, and now those afterwards, that human beings never really commit mortal sins. O tempora, o mores.
