Trust
Fr. Paul Ward

I met a man whose name was man,

and this is what we said.

Go.

Don’t let fear paralyze you.

What’s down the road?

you don’t know.

Go, and don’t fear it.

Ahead there is unknown,

behind me, I know something, but not much.

I trusted health, if failed me.

I trusted wealth, it vanished.

I trusted my plans, they betrayed you.

I trusted people, only to find treason.

Behind me, this is what I know;

ahead of me, this is what will be.

This road is a hell and a circle.

I erred when I trusted my thoughts.

I was frustrated when I trusted my heart.

I forgot when I trusted my memory.

I distorted when I trusted my imagination.

This is what I’ve gone through before,

This is what awaits me still.

This hell and circle are my road.

But the road you will follow is the road you make,

you’ve walked upon your own creature.

You acted, and you trusted your act,

and only your deed,

and only your creations.

Find a road made by Another,

who is Power and Love,

who is Faithfulness and Truth,

who made all things, even you,

and makes all

go.

Go back down these ancient paths,

and you will find one to trust.
