Prayer's Journey
Fr. Paul Ward

I’ve been taught by the masters

that prayer is a journey.

The journey is a path over three mountains.

The first mountain is purification.

The second mountain is illumination.

The third mountain is unity.

I’ve prayed all my life,

and I haven’t met those mountains.

Purification and illumination and unity

have nonetheless always been there.

They are three in one:

no surprise, thus is the Trinity.

Can prayer be reduced to a system?

Can friendship be pounded into a formula?

Can a conversation follow a map?

Do you want to pray like the mystics,

with powerful transports of ecstasy?

It’s easy: when you pray, just be yourself.

God will do the rest.

In all other journeys in life,

we progress by our own sweat and toil.

The journey of prayer is unique:

It’s the path itself which is moving,

we just have to stay on it.
